Art Therapy
Do you or someone you know of find it difficult to express yourself verbally? Art therapy is a helpful and supportive solution.. Drawing, sculpting and other forms of art can be used as tools for expressing feelings that may be challenging to convey with words. Art making can provide a safe space for communicating feelings in a non-threatening way. The key aspect of art therapy is to facilitate a therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist which allows mutual understanding and growth. Creative expression can also be helpful for people who prefer not to engage in a consistent dialogue.
In an art therapy session, there are various art materials to choose from and explore communication, self-expression, and abstract or symbolic thinking. If the person wishes to, they can share their thoughts and feelings about their work. The art of creating something can provide many benefits, and the therapist is present to witness the art-making process, explore the art with the client and listen actively.
Art therapy sessions are adjusted to each person’s needs and preferences. In general, art therapy is client-led, so the client is free to guide the session, while the therapist’s role is to provide a safe space which will allow the person’s emotional needs to be expressed. It is completely up to the client whether they talk or not in a session and what art they make. There is no need for art skills or education in art therapy! A certain amount of artistic skill may be achieved, and the therapist may assist in the art-making process where needed. .
